At one time, Chevy Chase was the name on everyone’s lips and was dubbed the funniest name in America. Now nobody remembers the whole man, even though he is a legendarily talented comedian.
One of Hollywood’s hottest names ruined his career because of his outrageous behavior. Combining dark humor and sitcom Chevy Chase worked as a comedian, actor and screenwriter from Saturday Night Live to blockbuster comedies, and he was a big shout in the movie industry in the 70s and 80s. Then he became an outcast in the film industry.
CNN news documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not sheds light on the downward spiral of Nestor, 82, in which cocaine addiction was just the beginning.
A sad start
Chevy Chase, originally Cornelius Crane Chase, was born in Manhattan in 1943, the son of a concert pianist and a publishing editor. His childhood was tough: his parents divorced when he was four years old.
The pianist’s mother remarried a couple of times with poor success. Chase has told the mother and this new psychoanalyst husband that he was abused. As punishment, or otherwise, he could be slapped in the face and locked in a closet or basement for several days.
– I lived every day under the control of the fear of death, Chevy Chase said in his biography published in 2007.
So you can probably assume that such a childhood left its mark on the man.
After growing up, Chevy Chase earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Bard College in 1967. He worked various jobs, started a comedy group and played as a musician in various bands. He also did a satirical show called The National Lampoon Radio Hour together John Belushi and Bill Murray’s with. The year 1975 was a turning point, and the wheels of fate began to drive Chase towards publicity.

Rise to stardom
The NBC channel started a new Saturday Night Live show, which he got to do. In the same year, New York magazine declared Chevy Chase the funniest man in America. The program, which gained legendary popularity, brought the man several Emmy awards. This led to film roles in comedies such as Top rot(1980), Faija’s got the job done (1983) and My name is Fletch (1985), as well as Fletch – He lives (1987).

At the height of his career, he hosted the Oscars and performed with the hottest names of his time, such as Goldie Hawn’s, Beverly D’Angelo, of John Candy and by Steve Martin with. He’s the guy who calls by Paul Simon trumpet in the music video You Can Call Me All – during the song and in the video, they joke about the two’s height difference.
Chase is known for being spiky funny and pushing the boundaries of good taste in his comedy. A 1985 joke where he said his homosexual colleague by Terry Sweeney who got AIDS, for example, was such a brain fart, which he had to regret.
In 1993, Chase received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but unfortunately, the star was already on the decline at that time. The reason was explosions on set, abusive language and constant arguments with colleagues. One of the triggers for the behavior could have been cocaine addiction, which was an evil at the height of its popularity. Floppy movies in the 90s lulled the comedian’s name into oblivion, and Chase’s behavior Memoirs of Invisible Man –making the film was so freezing in 1992 that the director John Carpenter planned to quit the industry, according to his own words.
In addition to drugs, the pressure made him use alcohol and soon Chase was drinking on set as well.

The height of rudeness
It wasn’t until 2009 that Chevy Chase got another chance playing Pierce Hawthorne in the comedy series Community. The bully character throwing insults was like a milder version of himself.
However, difficulties quickly began on the set and in later seasons Chase’s character was scripted in a wheelchair so that he would get as little screen time as possible and be out of most of the scenes. Directed the series Jay Chandrasekhar says in the news documentary that the scenes where Chase was involved were often taken out of the picture first to get the man off the set.
– They wanted to get rid of him every day! Told by the director.
One of the biggest controversies was that Chase invited a dark-skinned colleague Yvette Nicole Brown in descriptions with the n-word. A year for the presseven though he had apologized, and soon Chase was throwing a tantrum at his colleagues.

– Who pissed me off? My career is ruined! It’s ruined! Smell all the shit, he yelled at the camera crew.
The last scene was filmed, but Chase never returned to the set. The film crew celebrated the issue by yelling “fuck Chase” in unison at their work community’s party. In the news documentary, you can hear a voice message full of swear words that Chase sent to his former colleagues.
Was going in a coma calming?
The love life of the fun-loving but speed-blind favorite comedian has been just as stormy as his career. He has been married three times. One of the alliances ended in just a few months, and the SNL crew bet on it because they knew the groom was a tricky bet. The third with the truth said, and love Jayni Luken with has lasted since 1982. They have three daughters and the couple lives in New York.

The status of a wreck in Hollywood continues to play out in Chase’s life in many ways. For example, he didn’t get an invitation to perform on Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary broadcast, even though he was part of the original cast. He only does small roles. Hot Tub Time Machine and its sequel are the most famous films in which the man has been seen in this millennium.
According to the family, alcoholism and constant drinking led to heart failure in 2021. The man fell into a coma for eight days, and according to the daughter, the father practically came back from the dead. The memory was never fully restored – and maybe that’s a good thing.
However, life has calmed down after the arresting experience.
– I am happy that I can be with my family. I’m fine. Now I’m at home. I’m not going anywhere Chevy Chase said after his hospital stay.
