American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky has died at the age of 29, his family announced. The cause of death is currently unknown. “It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Daniel Naroditsky,” a statement released Monday by his club, the Charlotte Chess Center, wrote. “Daniel was a talented chess player, commentator and teacher, as well as a valued member of the chess community, admired and respected by fans and players around the world.” The cause of death was not specified. Born in California on November 9, 1995, Naroditsky was one of the best-known chess figures in the United States. A former world youth champion, he became a grandmaster (the highest honor that can be awarded to a chess player by the International Chess Federation) in 2013. In addition to competing, he was a popular commentator, writer and online trainer. Naroditsky regularly streamed on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube. Players and fans praised his teaching skills and friendly personality, while memories poured in from around the world. “I’m devastated,” said American world number two Hikaru Nakamura. “This is a huge loss for the chess world,” said Danny Rensch, a key figure at the popular chess website Chess.com, who described Naroditsky as “an extraordinary face and inspiration to our game – he was a friend and a brother. The news is devastating for the chess world and everyone who knew him. It’s impossible to put this kind of loss into words.”

recent success

Born in San Mateo, California, Naroditsky learned to play from his father at age 6 and was soon noticed as a prodigy, becoming the youngest player ever to win the Northern California K–12 Chess Championship. His international breakthrough came in 2007, when he won the gold medal in the Under-12 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in the play-offs, ahead of current GM Illya Nyzhnyk. Naroditsky’s recent competitive success dates back to August 2025, when he won the US National Blitz Championship with a perfect score of 14/14. Even on Chess.com’s Titled Tuesdays he was an opponent feared by all players.

creator

In recent years, Naroditsky had combined his career as a gamer with that of a creator, producing content on his Twitch (340,000 followers) and YouTube (482,000 followers) channels. He has gained a large following thanks to his insightful commentary and educational content. His lessons have also helped countless players improve their understanding of the game, and his sunny personality has made him one of the most respected figures in the chess world. Naroditsky was the “grandmaster in residence” of the Charlotte Chess Center from 2020 to 2025, which had become his home after studying history at Stanford University. In 2024 Naroditsky was involved in a high-profile controversy after being publicly accused of cheating online by former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik. Naroditsky denied all allegations and was publicly defended by GM and content creator Hikaru Nakamura.
