Transfer free of charge
Chelsea have signed Portuguese talent Diego Moreira. The 18-year-old was available on a free transfer after his contract at Benfica ended. Moreira is currently taking part in the U21 European Championship, where he came on as a substitute in two of three group games. Portugal’s youngsters meet England on Sunday (6 p.m.).
Moreira switched to Benfica’s youth team in 2020 and made two short appearances with the professionals. Last season, he played 24 games for the reserves and contributed three goals and two assists. He also collected three goal contributions in five appearances in the Youth League.
At the end of April, the Portuguese daily newspaper “Record” reported on an impending transfer to Chelsea. Moreira is said to have signed with the Blues at the time, while Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, among others, failed to win the winger. Benfica also tried to get an extension.
