Chelsea FC: Mauricio Pochettino will be the new coach from the summer

After a year without a club

As expected, Chelsea have unveiled Mauricio Pochettino as their new coach for next season. The Blues announced on Monday that the 51-year-old had signed a contract until 2025 with an option for a further year on the side of the club. The Argentinian replaces interim coach Frank Lampard on the sidelines – and becomes the number five coach for London within a year.

The separation from Thomas Tuchel in September was followed by Graham Potter, who had to leave in early April after 31 games. On an interim basis, Bruno Saltor was on the touchline for one game and Frank Lampard for the last 11 games of the season. Under Lampard, Chelsea clinched just one win and finished 12th in the Premier League – their worst performance since 1994.

Now it’s up to Pochettino, for whom CFC is the third station in England, where he coached Southampton FC between 2013 and 2014 and Tottenham Hotspur between 2014 and 2019. With the “Spurs” he reached, among other things, the Champions League final in his last season, which was lost to Liverpool (0:2). The Argentinian has a total of 256 games in the English top flight and a points average of 1.79. Most recently, between the beginning of 2021 and the summer of 2022, he looked after PSG in 84 games.

“Mauricio is a world-class coach with an excellent track record. We’re all looking forward to having him on board,” the owners, led by Todd Boehly, were quoted as saying. Sportdirector duo Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said: “Mauricio’s experience, drive for excellence, leadership and character will be of great benefit to Chelsea Football Club as we move forward. He is a successful coach who has worked at the highest level, in different leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development make him an exceptional candidate.”
