For the month of March there are again three free PlayStation games for Plus subscribers. TECHBOOK has checked what the new titles are good for.

While Sony took its time to announce February’s PS Plus games, we’ve already gotten a preview of what’s coming in March. As part of the State of Play event on February 23, the company not only unveiled new trailers, but also revealed the three titles that will soon be available for free with PlayStation Plus Essential.

Battlefield 2042 (PS4 and PS5)

With “Battlefield 2042” the franchise returns to the future. The game doesn’t have a single player mode, but players experience the story through multiplayer. Years of devastation from climate change and rising sea levels, economic collapse and the fragmentation of the European Union culminate in the so-called Kessler Syndrome. This causes a cascading effect that causes 70 percent of the satellites to fall to earth, resulting in a permanent blackout. Rising tensions between the US and Russia then erupted into war in 2042. As is typical for Battlefield, there are mass battles on large maps with up to 128 players. There are a number of specialists with specific skills and equipment, as well as the completely new game modes Portal and Hazard Zone.

Battlefield 2042 got off to a rocky start on the PlayStation 5, reflected in its meager Metacritic score of 63. Praise comes primarily for the large-scale battles that the franchise is known for. But especially at the beginning, the game was plagued by countless errors – both in technology and graphics. This not only robbed the fun, but also made the title almost unplayable at times. In the meantime, a number of patches have eliminated the worst problems. But “Battlefield 2024” does not go down well with the players themselves. A series of 0 and 1 point ratings result in a miserable score of 2.6 out of 10 points. Some players like the game mode. But most criticize the mass of bugs and missing game content.

Minecraft Dungeons (PS4)

The Minecraft offshoot “Minecraft Dungeons” is – as the name suggests – a classic dungeon crawler. That means defeating swarms of mobs and finding new weapons and gear to help along the way. In addition to canyons and swamps, it also goes through mines, as the name suggests. A special feature of the title is that you can not only crawl alone, but cross-platform with other players. Four players can team up across PlayStation, Switch, Xbox and PC to free the enslaved villagers of Erz-Illager.

Minecraft Dungeons has received mostly positive reviews. The spontaneous customization of the characters with any equipment and the healthy level of difficulty stand out here. One critic writes that the game could even be described as “cute Diablo”. On average, the critics rate the game with a score of 78. However, the players themselves are not so benevolent. Not only the partially getting used to gameplay is criticized. Some rightly note that the offshoot hardly takes over the mechanics of the classic. There is neither a crafting system nor a destructible environment. That’s why it’s only enough for an average of 6.2 out of 10 points.

Code Vein (PS4)

In the not too distant future, the world has fallen victim to the Great Collapse. The remnants of civilization are pierced by giant thorns and plagued by monsters. The so-called “revenants” – corpses brought back to life with a parasite in their hearts – are humanity’s last bastion. This gives them supernatural powers and makes them almost immortal. But they need human blood to keep from going insane and becoming cannibalistic and mindless monsters themselves.

Code Vein has received mixed reviews. Many praise the free adaptability of the characters and the interesting background story. However, the frustrating gameplay and the banal opponents as well as the outdated graphics attracted negative attention. This gives the game a Metacritic score of 70. However, it is better received by the players themselves, who rate it 7.8 out of 10 points. The Soulslike formula and character customization options seem to go down well here.

The PlayStation Plus games for February

PS Plus subscribers can still download the four February titles until March 6th. TECHBOOK has summarized for you what the games are good for.

Evil Dead: The Game (PS4 and PS5)

As Ash Williams and other well-known characters from the Evil Dead franchise, teams of four must explore, scavenge and survive. Because the game world is provided with all kinds of horror characters from the “Evil Dead” films and the TV series “Ash vs Evil Dead”. The goal is to find key items that can close the rift between the worlds. Players can either take on the roles of Ash and company, or devour the souls of the good as the Kandar demon, deadites, and shifting objects.

The game for the PlayStation 5 received rather mediocre reviews from critics. The recognizability of the setting, the eerie atmosphere and the special features of the playable characters and objects were praised. However, the reviewers had to struggle with technical problems, especially in earlier versions. The limited amount of content such as maps and the lack of variety were also noticed negatively. Overall, Evil Dead: The Game has a Metacritic score of 72 points. Users gave the game a slightly better rating of 7.2 out of 10. Many praise the fun gameplay here, others find the PVP mod with four against one player too asymmetrical.

OlliOlliWorld (PS4 and PS5)

OlliOlliWorld is the result of combining skateboarding and platformers. The aim is to smoothly connect grind, slide, air and grab tricks with the board on the colorful and lively courses. There are a number of missions and challenges to master in the diverse world of Radlandia. On the adventure to Gnarvana, players can customize their character with outfits, tricks and styles and thus find their own play style.

The game has received good reviews in both PS4 and PS5 versions. Critics praise the positive attitude to life and the gameplay, which is fluid but still offers demanding elements such as the many tricks. However, a few testers felt the learning curve was too steep, so OlliOlliWorld could be off-putting to beginners. Thus, the PS4 version has a score of 86 and the PS5 version has an 84 according to Metacritic. Players themselves are a bit more critical of the title, scoring 7.8 on PS4 and 7.6 on PS5.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light (PS4 and PS5)

Beyond Light is the fifth expansion for the long-running sci-fi fantasy hit Destiny 2. This time, players will travel to Jupiter’s icy moon Europa where they can learn the elemental power of Stasis. There is also a whole range of new, exotic equipment to collect. The Guardians must stop the fallen Kell Eramis on Europa, who wants to take revenge on Earth with the power of darkness.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light has received medium to good reviews according to Metacritic. Critics praise the expansion’s approach, which stays true to the spirit of the Destiny franchise and expands on the backstory. However, for some, the amount of content the extension adds is not enough. Thus, the game achieves a score of 77 for the PS5 and 76 for the PS4. For gamers, however, Beyond Light comes off much worse. There is a lot of criticism here for the lack of new content such as equipment and weapons. Many also consider the scope of the missions and tasks to be too small. Thus, the game only achieves 6 out of 10 points on the PS5 and even only a poor 3.9 out of 10 points on the PS4.

Mafia: The Definitive Edition (PS4)

A real classic among open world games that got a complete remake with new graphics in 2020. Mafia: The Definitive Edition is set in 1930’s Lost Heaven, loosely based on New York City, Chicago and San Francisco. In the era of American Prohibition, players take on the role of taxi driver Thomas “Thommy” Angelo, who accidentally becomes involved in the machinations of the mafia. After initial hesitation, Thommy rises through the ranks of the notorious Salieri crime family.

While Mafia: The Definitive Edition doesn’t quite match the excellent quality of the base game, it still got rather positive reviews according to Metacritic. Testers praise that the remake has been given a new coat of paint where it was needed – without changing the dense atmosphere. However, the game’s age is reflected in the mechanics, including clumsy weapon handling and abysmal vehicle controls. Nevertheless, it achieves a respectable score of 76 points. Users rate it a little worse and criticize that from today’s perspective it simply no longer meets the requirements. There is not enough to do and the story is too linear to keep up with modern titles. That’s why the remake only gets 7 out of 10 points – a clear penalty, because the original from 2002 convinced users with a very good 9.1 points.
