Check iPhone battery capacity and performance – TECHBOOK

iPhone users can check their battery health in Settings. TECHBOOK explains how you get information about capacity and performance and what they actually mean.

With each charging cycle, the iPhone loses a little battery capacity. The battery can then store less electricity and has to be charged more frequently. If at some point it can no longer hold its voltage, this can even lead to system crashes in extreme cases. Apple itself guarantees that iPhone batteries will last 500 full charge cycles reach 80 percent of their original capacity.

This is how you can check the iPhone battery capacity

1. Open the settings of your iPhone

2. Scroll down until you get to the point battery access and select it. Here you can already see which applications are using your battery the most and when you have used them particularly frequently in the past 24 hours and 10 days.

3. In the battery settings select the option battery condition

4. You can now use the maximum capacity and the peak performance query your battery

What does this information mean?

The maximum capacity indicates in percent how much of the original capacity of the battery is still available. The lower this number, the shorter the battery life. The maximum performance, on the other hand, reveals whether the battery is still behaving normally. If the battery cells are still healthy, the information “Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance” is given. However, if the iPhone battery no longer supplies the same voltage, the message appears that the iPhone can no longer deliver the necessary maximum performance or capacity. Then, by the way, the automatic performance management also intervenes. This means that the iPhone reduces the performance on its own so as not to further drain the battery. If you don’t want that, you can disable this feature with a click of the blue button Deactivate switch off.

If the maximum performance of the battery is impaired, a message may also appear stating that the battery condition has degraded significantly. The following is a reference to Apple Authorized Repair Services who can perform a battery replacement to restore original performance.

Here’s what you can do to save iPhone battery

  • Do not fully charge the battery: Always charging the battery to 100% may give you a sense of security, but puts a heavy load on the battery cells. A charge level between 90-100 percent degrades the iPhone battery capacity the most. It is therefore best to only charge the battery up to approx. 70-80 percent. In addition, with iOS 13, Apple itself has the function of the “optimized store‘ was introduced, in which the iPhone battery does not charge above 80 percent when the device is left on a charging station for an extended period of time.
  • Battery not fully discharged: Just like always charging the battery to 100 percent, completely discharging it is bad for the battery chemistry. Above all, if the battery is repeatedly discharged from 100 to 0 percent without a charging break, the capacity can be reduced by up to 30 percent within just one year.
  • Protect from extreme temperatures: Keep iPhone out of the sun and turn off features like GPS. Heat negatively affects battery chemistry and can contribute to faster capacity degradation. The same applies to cold, although the long-term damage is less. As a guide: The ideal usage temperature of an iPhone is between 0 and 35 degrees.
  • Charge without case: It is best to charge your iPhone without a protective case to protect the battery and capacity. The reason is that the heat generated during charging can then escape better.

Apple is – out of necessity – setting a good example

With the precise overview of the battery status, Apple is ahead of the manufacturers of Android smartphones. For a long time, however, it was not possible for Apple users to see the performance of their battery more precisely. However, as reported in 2018, the Batterygate scandal revealed that Apple deliberately throttled the performance of older iPhones so as not to impair battery life. Apple vowed to improve and announced that it would give users more control over the battery. Since then it has been possible to check the health of the smartphone battery.
