Transparent Mugler dress, medieval tattoos, two completely different worlds: Chappell Roan proved that red carpet is art at the 2026 Grammys. We explain her look.

At the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on February 1, Chappell Roan was one of the most talked-about artists – less for the trophies and more for her uncompromising aesthetic. The singer, who was nominated for two awards, appeared in a sheer Mugler dress, which was complemented by intricate temporary tattoos, making it one of the most visually striking moments of the evening.

Roan proved once again that she sees the red carpet as a stage – not for mere glamor, but for stories. A concept explanation.

Medieval fantasy as an aesthetic concept

Make-up artist Andrew Dahling was responsible for the overall visual appearance and developed a consciously reduced beauty concept together with MAC Cosmetics. The aim was not to overlay the tattoos, but to give them space. Dahling explained to the press: “As soon as the tattoos came into play, everything took on a medieval dimension – but in an authentic way.” The motifs seemed less like decoration and more like part of a self-contained fantasy world that combined historical references with modern pop iconography.

Some observers interpreted individual motifs of the body painting symbolically. For example, a pony motif in the chest area was read as a possible reference to Roan’s song “Pink Pony Club”, one of the central titles of her work to date.

Aside from the staged Grammy look, Chappell Roan also has real tattoos. These include, among other things, a swan motif on the forearm, to which she attributes personal meaning and which is connected to the musician’s current artistic inspirations.

Restraint as a stylistic device

In contrast to Chappell Roan’s often eccentric glam looks, this time the team opted for conscious restraint. Dahling describes the approach, according to Marie Claire: “There was so much going on – the tattoos, the prosthetics, all these details. We wanted it all to fit together and respect the world we created.”

Smoky but soft eyes, subtle metallic accents and a subdued nude red on the lips ensured that jewelry, textures and silhouettes remained the focus.

A second look, a different mood

Later in the evening, Roan appeared in a second outfit: a flowing, angelically draped dress with a cooler feel. The makeup was adjusted accordingly – lavender tones, metallic highlights and dramatic shading created a new atmosphere without abandoning the basic idea of controlled cool. Here, too, it was less about effects than about attitude.

Between pop theater and the next career step

Musically, Chappell Roan is currently in a phase of readjustment. After the success of her last releases, she is working on new material that, according to interviews, will be more personal and experimental at the same time. Topics such as identity, desire and self-presentation remain central, but are more closely linked to electronic and theatrical elements. Roan doesn’t think of pop as a product, but as a total work of art – an attitude that is also reflected in her visual decisions.

Grammys without a trophy – but with an impact

Even though Chappell Roan wasn’t able to convert her nominations into a Grammy in the end, her performance was a statement. In an awards ceremony that often relies on safe images, she used the global stage for an artistic design that defied common expectations. Sometimes, as this evening showed, the more lasting victory lies not in the gold, but in the memory.
