Champions League: Win or fly? FCB women demanded

As of: January 23, 2024 1:04 p.m

After four match days, the FC Bayern women slipped to third place in the difficult Group C of the Champions League. They urgently need success in Italy.

The FC Bayern women can definitely get a few tips. After all, a former Munich resident has just gained experience with the women from AS Roma. Lina Magull won 2-0 last weekend against the leaders of Italy’s Serie A femminile, a few days earlier she had said goodbye to the Munich women. Now the Romans will face FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Bayern women urgently need success

And for the FCB women, it’s all about progress on Wednesday evening, one match day before the end. They are already challenged in their first competitive game of the year, most recently winning a test against Spain’s first division team FC Granada 4-0. In the Champions League they are only in third place in the difficult Group C with five points. AFC Ajax Amsterdam (7) and Paris St. Germain (6) are ahead of them, with Rome lurking in fourth place (4).

“We have to accept the situation and focus on the game. We are aware of what we have to deliver,” said coach Alexander Straus. In addition, the upcoming opponent “has the advantage that they have already had games”. For Bayern, on the other hand, it was five weeks ago when they went into the break with three competitive games without a win.

“Win or fly” – or as Louis van Gaal called it, “death or gladioli” – that should be the motto for the Munich team in the final two games in Rome and against PSG. A player who has taken the opposite path to Magull and knows Roma at least as well is likely to help: Linda Sembrant. The Munich team recently borrowed Sweden’s national defender from Juventus. She immediately strengthens the club – and should provide stability defensively and creative ideas in the forward movement.

Magull and Rall were looking for new ones challenges

FC Bayern coach Alexander Straus also sees the surprising departure of national player Magull as an opportunity for the Bayern Munich footballers – and not just because she could now pass on a few tips as a scout. “We have to refresh the squad and open the door to younger players,” said the Norwegian on Tuesday: “We are in a transformation process. We want to build the next team that is very successful.”

Straus continued to say about Magull’s departure: “It’s a natural process, we can’t keep every player.” Also the former national player Maximiliane Rall (Chicago Red Stars) left the club on Monday. The two wanted “a new challenge”. The next big challenge awaits in Munich on Wednesday.
