Champions League: VfL Wolfsburg in the top game against, but not in Rome

Status: 11/22/2022 7:09 p.m

In the Champions League, the VfL Wolfsburg footballers are clearly on course for the round of 16 after two wins in the opening game. Now it’s off to AS Roma, the closest rivals in Group B.

For Tommy Stroot, the duels with the Italian runner-up have a trend-setting character. “For me it’s like a round of 16. We have the first and second leg in a row and we know that we can win the direct comparison,” said the Wolfsburg coach before the away game on Wednesday (9 p.m. in the live ticker at sportschau .de). “We would like to win both games, which is possible.”

The second comparison between the German champions and cup winners and Rome will take place on December 8th (6:45 p.m.) in Wolfsburg. With six points from two games, the VfL women are currently leading Group B ahead of the Roman women who have the same number of points.

No floodlights – game will be kicked off in Latina

On Wednesday, however, the two teams will not meet in Rome, but in Latina at the Domenico Francioni stadium, around 67 kilometers south of the Italian capital. The problem: The real home of the AS women, the Stadio Tre Fontane in Rome, has no floodlights.

“We were all a bit surprised that we weren’t playing in Rome. But in the end it doesn’t matter, we have to give it our all.”
— Tabea Wassmuth

“Rome is an unpleasant opponent, we have to go full throttle. It would be annoying to lose points there,” Tabea Waßmuth told NDR. The international has recovered from a muscle injury and is available for Stroot, who warns of the Italians: “The Romans are doing really well in the league and have a lot of international experience. And they’re totally ripped off.”

Wolfsburg further without Oberdorf

An important support in the VfL midfield will be missing: For national player Lena Oberdorf, the game comes too early after an acromioclavicular joint injury. This was announced by VfL after the final training session on Tuesday afternoon. Also unable to play are the Bundesliga leaders defender Sara Agrez (back) and substitute goalkeeper Lisa Weiß (flu infection).
