After a brilliant performance against Pick Szeged, SC Magdeburg celebrated their next success in the Handball Champions League. At the same time, the SCM set a new record for the premier class.
Defending champion SC Magdeburg is still on course for the quarterfinals in the Handball Champions League without losing any points. The Green-Reds won against Hungary’s handball runner-up Szeged in front of 5,886 spectators after an inspiring performance 40:32 (19:13). With their 13th premier class win in a row across all seasons, Bennet Wiegert’s team set a new record.
The best Magdeburg shooter was Gisli Kristjansson with six goals. Goalkeeper Matej Mandic also impressed with a total of eleven saves.
Magdeburg doubled their lead
Magdeburg didn’t start the game well, fell behind early on, and scored for the first time in the 5th minute (1:3). The Elbestadters gradually worked their way into the game and finally equalized (4:4/10.). Former SCM goalkeeper Tobias Thulin proved to be a good support for the guests. With a 4-0 run, the SCM moved ahead by three goals (8:5/14th) and doubled their lead until the break.

SCM pulled away to nine goals
At the beginning of the second half, the teams increased the number of hits – Magdeburg led by seven, but Szeged reduced it to five goals again (21:16/33.). When they were outnumbered, the Hungarians got out of step, the SCM pulled away to nine goals and the guests called a time-out (26:17/38.). Although this briefly slowed Magdeburg’s attacking momentum, Szeged was unable to turn the game around.
After the winter and European Championship break, the premier class continues on February 18th. The SCM only needs a draw to advance directly to the quarter-finals.
