Champions League: Matip redeems Liverpool, Brugge shines in Porto

Thanks to Joel Matip, Liverpool clinched a win over Ajax Amsterdam in the Champions League. Brugge won high at FC Porto. Inter Milan and Sporting Lisbon also celebrate.

Thanks to Joel Matip, Liverpool clinched a win over Ajax Amsterdam in the Champions League. Brugge won high at FC Porto. Inter Milan and Sporting Lisbon also celebrate.

The former Bundesliga professional from Schalke made it 2-1 (1-1) with a header in the 89th minute on Tuesday (09/13/22). Superstar Mohamed Salah scored the 1-0 lead (17th minute). Mohammed Kudus equalized with a brilliant shot for the Dutch champion to make it 1-1 (27th). Both teams had chances after that, then Matip scored just before the end.

Bruges manages the next surprise

Club Brugge managed their second upset in Group B after beating Bayer Leverkusen 1-0. The Belgian title holder even won 4-0 (1-0) at FC Porto and leads the table with six points. The Spaniard Ferran Jutglà (15th penalty), Kamal Sowah (47th), Andreas Skov Olsen (52nd) and 17-year-old Antonio Nusa (89th) scored in Porto’s constant rain. The hosts remain without points.

Pilsen without points

Inter Milan had previously been able to win their first win. Just under a week after the 0-2 draw against FC Bayern Munich, the Italians won 2-0 (1-0) in Group C at Viktoria Pilsen. While Inter got the first three points, the Czech soccer champions are at the bottom of the table without any points. Pilsen had lost 1:5 at FC Barcelona at the start.

With national player Robin Gosens in the starting XI, coach Simone Inzaghi’s team took the lead after 20 minutes through former Wolfsburg Bundesliga professional Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian shot into the right corner after a pass from Gosens and Joaquin Correa. After the red card for Pilsen’s Pavel Bucha (61st minute), Denzel Dumfries increased the lead to 2-0 (70th minute) after a Dzeko pass. The Czechs are opponents of FC Bayern on October 4th.

Sporting Lisbon wins just before the final whistle

In Frankfurt Group D, Sporting Lisbon won late 2-0 (0-0) against them Tottenham Hotspur the second success. After the 3-0 win at Eintracht last week, Paulinho headed in for the hosts in the 90th minute to make it 1-0. Arthur Gomes made it 2-0 (90+3). Tottenham could not use the playful superiority and still have three points in their account.

Tottenham, which still kicked off against Olympique Marseille had been successful (2-0), Eintracht’s next opponent is on October 4th.
