Serge Gnabry will be out for a long time with a serious injury. He still wanted to be there for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in the French capital. Bayern sports director Max Eberl reveals details.
For many it is the anticipated final of the Champions League: Bayern Munich against Paris Saint-Germain. The first leg in the semi-finals of the “premier class” on Tuesday evening (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online) is eagerly awaited.
Serge Gnabry won’t be able to help away in Paris. The attacker tore the adductor muscles in his right thigh during training in mid-April, meaning he will not only be out for the rest of the German record champions’ season, but also for the World Cup in the summer and will not be part of the German national team.
But Gnabry was still there for Bayern’s first leg in Paris’ Prinzenparkstadion – and the pictures of the 30-year-old caused a stir.
As could be seen on TV images broadcast on the streaming channel Prime, Gnabry was pushed into the stadium by Bayern team manager Maciej Jagiellowicz. He also had two crutches with him, which he used to walk from the team bus to the airport entrance on the outward flight of coach Vincent Kompany’s team.
Bayern’s sports director Max Eberl later confirmed in an interview a few minutes before kick-off that the striker’s journey with the team was a laborious one: “He was lifted onto the plane with a jack.” But apparently he really wanted to be there when Bayern perhaps laid the foundation for a place in the Champions League final.
The injury to his star was bad news for FC Bayern: Gnabry scored 10 goals and 11 assists in 37 games this season, making him Munich’s fourth-best scorer.
