VAR was used in a wild first half of the game in Paris. The focus: a defender from FC Bayern. The experts have different opinions.
Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-2 defeat against FC Bayern in the semi-finals of the Champions League led to violent protests from the Munich team – but for referee expert Lutz Wagner, the decision in stoppage time in the first half was understandable. “The left arm goes out and increases the defensive area. In my opinion, it is definitely a punishable handball because the body surface is widened. According to these pictures, a correct decision,” said Wagner on Prime Video.
Referee Sandro Schärer initially allowed play to continue when Alphonso Davies blocked the ball in the penalty area. After studying the video, the Swiss decided on a hand penalty. Ousmane Dembélé didn’t miss the chance. Davies first received a Dembélé cross on his hip, from where the ball bounced to his hand. However, according to Wagner, the previous hip contact “didn’t play a role.”
However, the Prime experts had a different opinion. “It’s the super slomo again, that’s the worst in football, everything looks much worse,” said Christoph Kramer.
It wasn’t a penalty for Mats Hummels either: “After the hit, my hand flies away, which makes it look worse. The ball bounces off my hip, I always thought there shouldn’t be a penalty.”
