FC Bayern Munich beat PSV Eindhoven after a close game on matchday 8 of the Champions League league phase. Jamal Musiala scores in his starting eleven comeback. Harry Kane decides the match.
Thanks to a stroke of genius from Jamal Musiala and Lennart Karl as well as a brilliant Jonas Urbig, FC Bayern Munich won 2-1 (0-0) at the end of the Champions League league phase at PSV Eindhoven. With the victory, FCB moves into the round of 16 of the premier class as second in the table.
And Urbig was subsequently named player of the game. “I am happy”said Urbig. “But it’s nothing I’m conceited about. I’ll continue on my path.”
Musiala celebrates Starting line-up comeback
Bayern lined up in Eindhoven with a starting eleven that had changed in five positions compared to the 1-2 defeat against FC Augsburg. Head coach Vincent Kompany helped Musiala make his starting eleven comeback after the terrible injury last summer.
In addition to the dribbling artist, Tom Bischof, Dayot Upamecano, Joshua Kimmich and Nicolas Jackson moved into the starting line-up, while Minjae Kim was missing due to suspension and Alphonso Davies, Leon Goretzka, Michael Olise and Harry Kane were given a break.
PSV comes into the game better
But the first few minutes belonged to the home team. Spurred on by a frenetic home crowd in the PSV Stadium, the Dutch started aggressively and got a few shots, but they didn’t produce any results.
Bayern tried to calm the game down, but found it difficult to cope with the high pressing of the Dutch league leaders. After all: a free kick from Bischof just went over the crossbar in the 6th minute. Bayern managed little from the game, with the exception of a header chance for Musiala (12th).
Veerman checks Urbig from a distance
PSV’s Joey Veerman forced Neuer representative Urbig into a brilliant feat with a long-range shot in the 17th minute. A shot from the 27-year-old would have been right in the left corner of Bayern’s goal, but Urbig’s great flying effort prevented the hosts from taking the lead.
It took until the 26th minute before the Kompany team had to really intervene with Eindhoven goalkeeper Matej Kovar for the first time. The lively Bishop prevented the Dutch from attempting a counterattack and placed Jackson in the center. The Senegalese shot a bit hastily from the edge of the penalty area, but his shot was too central for Kovar.
Urbig holds on to zero
There were two main reasons why it was still 0-0 at the break as the game progressed. PSV’s usury of opportunities and a great Urbig. The designated new heir was able to distinguish himself in several scenes and – unlike against Augsburg – did not show any weakness.
After the break, a similar picture emerged: Bayern tried hard, but the physicality and high pace of former BVB coach Peter Bosz’s team caused problems for Kimmich and Co.
Musiala scores after a brilliant move by Karl
The turning point only came in the 58th minute. A PSV loss of the ball ended up with Lennart Karl, who played a one-two with Musiala and then served the starting eleven returnee again by tunneling through the legs of PSV’s Armando Obispo in the five-meter area. Musiala hit the ball with his right from a tight angle to make it 1-0 for Bayern, which was somewhat fortunate at the time.
The duo’s brilliant move was their last of the game because Kompany made a quadruple substitution shortly afterwards, bringing on Kane, Olise, Davies and Serge Gnabry for Musiala, Karl, Upamecano and Jackson (62′).
Kane counters PSV equalizer
Anyone who expected sovereign management would be disappointed. Eindhoven remained dangerous. Ismael Saibari got the ball after a throw-in in the Bayern penalty area and drove the ball into Urbig’s box (78′), which was both impressive and unstoppable.
Unlike against Augsburg, FCB found the answer this time. Urbig set up Luis Diaz with a long pass, which was passed to Kane in the middle. The Englishman stayed cool and made the final score 2-1 with a powerful right-footed shot (84′). In stoppage time, PSV’s Mauro Junior was sent off with a yellow-red card after a foul on Olise (90th+3).
