Champions League: FC Bayern, BVB, RB Leipzig & Union Berlin collect it

Four Pillar Model

The last edition of the Champions League in the usual mode with eight groups of four at the start has not even started, but the clubs can already plan with secure income. The distribution of the commercial income from the “premier league” published by UEFA envisages a share of just over 2 billion euros for the clubs, which is divided into four pillars. Some clubs can count on more money than others as a result.

Pillar 1: Starting bonuses for all Champions League participants

The first pillar includes a general starting bonus for all Champions League participants. 25 percent of the total share (500.5 million euros) is paid out to the clubs. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive €15.64m. The starting bonus is divided into a down payment of 14.8 million euros and a final payment during the season of 840,000 euros.

Pillar 2: Fixed amounts for performance in the Champions League season

The second pillar includes performance-related fixed amounts that reward good performance during the current Champions League season. 30 percent (EUR 600.6 million) of the total share is allocated for this. In the group stage, a club receives €2.8m for a win and €930,000 for both clubs in the event of a draw. The remaining amounts – 930,000 euros per draw, which is a third of the possible 2.8 million euros in the event of a win – are distributed among all participants in the group stage at the end.

The advancement secures the Champions League participants the next million income. Reaching the round of 16 brings 9.6 million euros, and reaching the quarter-finals would add another 10.6 million euros. There’s €12.5m waiting in the semi-finals, and an appearance in the final at London’s Wembley Stadium would secure another €15.5m. The Champions League winner can also look forward to a bonus of EUR 4.5 million, the associated qualification for the UEFA Super Cup brings another EUR 3.5 million (the winner receives EUR 1 million).

Pillar 3: Coefficient dependent amounts for Champions League participants

The third pillar is a coefficient-dependent amount for each Champions League participant. A total of 30 percent (EUR 600.6 million) of the total share will also be distributed for this purpose. The basis for the coefficient-dependent amount is the international performance of the clubs over the past ten years.

Discuss about the Champions LeagueThis way!
Based on the game points collected during this period (a win gives two points and a draw one point) as well as bonus points for winning a title in the European Cups, a ranking of the 32 participants results. However, if the club coefficient over the past ten years is less than 20 per cent of the association coefficient over the same period, the latter is used. The share of the pot increases by the same amount from place to place, meaning that newcomers to European competition collect less than top clubs that are frequently represented.

The last in the ranking receives 1.137 million euros, for the penultimate it is already 2.274 million euros. The sum will increase little by little up to the first place, at 36.38 million euros, which will be paid to Real Madrid, which will play in the ten-year rating comes to 381 points. Behind them is FC Bayern (314), which thus collects 35.25 million euros. BVB (184) came in ninth at EUR 27.29 million, RB Leipzig (101) in 18th at EUR 17.06 million.

It looks bad for Champions League newcomer Union Berlin (17), which has only been represented in Europe in the last two years. Although the higher federation coefficient of 30.781 is taken into account for the “iron” team, the Köpenickers only leave RC Lens (23.515) and the winner of the playoffs Royal Antwerp (17) against AEK Athens (21) behind in the ranking. Union can only plan with 3.41 million euros for the time being, but depending on the outcome of the other playoffs, the Berliners could still make up three places, then it would be 6.82 million euros – still almost 28.5 million euros less than the Munich ones.

Pillar 4: Amounts from the Champions League market pool

The last and smallest pillar are variable amounts from the market pool, which still make up 15 percent of the total share (EUR 300.3 million). The exact calculation of the clubs’ amounts can only be made after the end of the competition. The money is distributed in proportion to the value of an association’s television market, with clubs being awarded according to their market shares.

Half of the amount for an association is split based on the performance in the previous season in the domestic league. With regard to the Bundesliga, FC Bayern receives 40 percent of the sum as champions, BVB as runners-up 30 percent, RB Leipzig in third place 20 percent and Union Berlin in fourth place 10 percent. The other half is paid out based on the number of games played by the clubs in the current Champions League season.
