Champions League – fan abuse: Atlético has to block the stadium section

Nyon/Madrid (dpa) – Because of discriminatory failures by its fans in the first leg of the Champions League, the Spanish football club Atlético Madrid has had to close a section of the stadium in the quarter-final second leg against Manchester City.

At least 5,000 seats must remain empty in the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, the European Football Union (UEFA) demanded in a statement.

In addition, Atlético must display a banner with the words “#NoToRacism” with the UEFA logo in the arena. Madrid fans were noticed in the first leg last Tuesday through discriminatory actions and threw objects on the field. Premier League leaders Man City won the first duel 1-0.
