In the group draw for the women’s Champions League in Nyon, the FC Bayern players got into a difficult group. Among other things, it is against FC Barcelona. It should be a little easier for Wolfsburg.

In addition to last year’s second and winner 2020 FC Barcelona, the Munich team will also meet FC Rosengard and Benfica Lisbon, according to the draw on Monday (October 3rd, 2022). Despite the difficult opponents, Giulia Gwinn’s team should be top contenders for second place in the group. Bayern were victorious against FC Rosengard from Sweden in the quarter-finals of the 2020/21 season. They beat Benfica in the group stage in the 21/22 season. Thanks to the UEFA coefficient, the Munich women ended up in pot two.

Against Barcelona, coach Alexander Straus’ team also meets top star Keira Walsh, for whom Barca paid Manchester City 460,000 euros in the summer, the highest transfer fee in the history of women’s football.

Wolfsburg favorites

For VfL Wolfsburg it’s against Slavia Prague, St. Pölten and AS Roma. The German champions were seeded in pot one and are the clear favorites in this group.

Matchday 1 is scheduled for October 19th and 20th, with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the quarter-finals. The final will take place on June 3rd or 4th in Eindhoven, the defending champions are record winners Olympique Lyon. Eintracht Frankfurt had failed in qualifying at Ajax Amsterdam.

Last spring, UEFA announced that it would pay out 24 million euros per season for the league – four times as much as before. For the participation in the group phase there is only 400,000 euros.
