Alexander Sørloth scored a hat-trick to send Atlético Madrid into the round of 16 of the Champions League. Coach Diego Simeone’s team defeated Club Bruges 4-1 (1-1) thanks to the ex-Leipzig player’s three goals. In the first leg there was a 3-3 draw in Belgium.
Atlético’s opponent in the next round comes from England: it will be either Liverpool FC or Tottenham Hotspur. The draw will take place on Friday (12 noon) at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.
Sørloth (23rd) gave the hosts the lead after a mistake by Bruges keeper Simon Mignolet. Joel Ordóñez (36th), national defender of Germany’s World Cup opponents Ecuador, equalized with a header from close range to make it 1-1. After the 2-1 win by Johnny Cardoso (48′), Atlético was back on track for the round of 16 shortly after the break, Sørloth (76’/87′) finally made the decision in the final phase.
