Champions League: Ajax gamble away Lisbon lead – Elanga saves Man United draw at Atlético

Benfica Lisbon has stopped the winning streak of Ajax Amsterdam in the “premier class”. After six victories in the six group games, the Dutch did not get more than 2: 2 (2: 1) in the round of 16 first leg of the Champions League in front of 54,760 spectators in the Estádio da Luz.

Dusan Tadic (18th minute) gave Ajax the lead, after which CL top scorer Sébastien Haller struck twice. First the ex-Frankfurter scored in his own goal (26th), shortly afterwards he put his team in the lead again (29th). Substitute Roman Yaremchuk (72nd) managed to equalize for Benfica.

Man United wakes up late: Elanga saves draw at Atlético

Ralf Rangnick, meanwhile, kept his chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League with Manchester United. In the round of 16 first leg, the German coach’s team won a 1-1 (0-1) draw at Atlético Madrid.

The Swede Anthony Elanga (80th) secured the flattering draw for the guests, who were weak for long stretches, with his late goal. Portugal international João Félix (7th) had previously headed the Spaniards into the lead. The second leg will take place on March 15th.
