Champagne bottles with hard drug MDMA have surfaced again | NOW

The Federal Food Agency (FAVV) in Belgium has announced that another batch of champagne bottles has surfaced which presumably contains the hard drug MDMA. These are again 3-litre bottles of the brand Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial.

The food authority reports that the bottles were sold through points of sale in Belgium and web shops. It is not known how the MDMA ended up in the bottles or whether bottles from this batch were sold in other countries.

There are currently no incidents reported in Belgium, but the FASFC asks consumers who have bought the champagne to be very careful. Nothing can be seen on the outside of the bottles, but when you open the bottle it is immediately apparent that something is wrong, if it contains MDMA. The content does not fizz and has a deviating red-brown colour. The smell is also different when it contains MDMA. According to the FASFC, the contents then smell like anise.

In February, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority issued a warning for the champagne in question. Bottles with a certain serial number contained liquid MDMA. Several people became ill after drinking the champagne and in Germany it led to a death.
