Chad Smith covers Thirty Seconds To Mars — without knowing the song first

The drummer played “The Kill” and at first thought he was covering My Chemical Romance.

Drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers shows his skills when he performs a live cover of Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “The Kill” (2006) without even knowing the track in advance or even playing it several times.

The drummer recorded the one-take cover as part of a “Drumeo” format, in which exactly this idea of replaying a most likely unknown song is the charm. Smith said he thought the track he was playing was one from My Chemical Romance.

At the beginning of this live session, Chad Smith says: “Here’s some music that I’ve probably never heard before. And I will try to play them and do my best. I’ll give it a good try at music and see if I can make sense of it.”

After playing through the entire song, he laughingly asks the format’s hosts, “What the hell was that?” Was that My Chemical Romance or something?” He continues to puzzle: “It’s an emo thing. I don’t know what it is.”
