Cesc Fàbregas leaves AS Monaco after ‘worst year’ of career

Wants to continue career

Cesc Fàbregas will leave AS Monaco when his contract expires in the summer. The 35-year-old Spaniard confirmed this in an interview with the magazine “So feet“. “It’s definitely over between Monaco and me. My contract expires in June and I’m looking for a fresh start. My head needs a fresh start somewhere else,” said Fàbregas, who signed from Chelsea in January 2019 for €9 million.

“It was not only the worst year of my career but of my life because if I’m not happy in football then I’m not happy in my life either. I’ve suffered a lot this year and it’s been tough mentally,” said the Spain icon, who has won 110 caps. In the current season, Fàbregas has only made five short appearances for the Monaco pros due to injury. “You just have to stay strong,” said the midfielder, who wants to continue his active career.

“To be honest I’ve already had two or three phone calls in the last two weeks from some of my former coaches wanting to know what I want to do, to see if I’d like to join them as a coach in the summer. But this year was so bad that I can’t finish with it. Not after building this career,” says Fàbregas. “I want to keep playing. I’m thankful for the career I’ve had, but I don’t feel like it’s over. I just want to enjoy my football and continue to be competitive at a certain level.”

Farewell to AS Monaco: future of Fàbregas still open

It has not yet been decided where Fàbregas will go. “I’m open to anything, I just want to have fun. After this year I just want to play and enjoy my football. The location doesn’t really matter, it’s more my head,” explained Fàbregas. “When I’m fit, I feel really good. When I train with my teammates, I don’t feel any different in terms of passion for the game. It’s all about finding the right project and making it happen. I will look for a new project and see where the future takes me.”
