Journalist Pirkko Arstila commented on the proposal of the Central Finland Coalition Youth for Iltalehti.

Journalist Pirkko Arstila, 86, bursts into unbelieving laughter. He has just heard The proposal of the Central Finland Coalition Youth about the 80 -year -old age limit for voting and nomination.

“I haven’t heard so ridiculous,” Arstila says.

Arstila emphasizes that people over 80 are all a little different.

-There are many fully skilled and active people in over 80 years of age. Why not participate in the construction of society? In addition, we pay taxes, Arstila says.

Central Finland Coalition Young people have justified their proposal by the fact that aging can affect human health and decision-making ability. On the other hand, they have pointed out that voting can create an important experience of belonging to society for the elderly.

In their statement, the Central Finland Coalition Party proposes that “elderly people could be organized for children’s elections where they could have a sense of belonging to society.”

– This is young people’s notion that there is nothing about old people. Let’s get to know older people first! I really do not support this proposal, Arstila says.

Diverse population

Arstila became Finland’s first female news anchor in 1981. Later, Arstila worked as a freelancer. He has never retired at any time.

In his 85th anniversary interview in 2023, Arstila was annoyed by the fact that the media will clean up older authors and, consequently, the older readers and listeners.

– We old people are truncated in one cake, as if we were all the same. Even if there is no other population group that is equally diverse! One climbs the Himalayas, the other is at the bottom of the bed. In between, there is a whole spectrum, Arstila gave an example.
