C.imitators for pets? There are few of them in Italy. The last one, fresh from its inauguration in La Spezia where a part of the cemetery of the Boschetti has been destined to the four-legged. City of 90 thousand inhabitants for 10 thousand dogs, and 40 thousand if we consider the entire province, La Spezia allows the animal to be buried in the field reserved for four legs or, after cremation, together with the owner.

Other cities, from Desenzano to Genoa, to Turin, are trying.

In Milan, the largest

Meanwhile in Milan there is the largest animal cemetery in Europe: The Guardian Fidoopened in 2015, is surrounded by greenery of the Parco Sud Milano, between the Trenno Park and the Bosco in Città. Over 50 thousand square meters, which can accommodate up to 30 thousand animals, regardless of breed and size.

Costs? Six hundred euros for a pitch (over time it can be used to accommodate other animals) plus 60 euros per year for maintenance and cleaning costs. The Guardian Fido, who also manages the first Municipal Public Cemetery for pets in San Giuliano in Milan, he also created a virtual cemetery, where to celebrate memory of your own … parrot, cat, hamster.

In Rome, the oldest

Rome boasts the oldest animal cemetery in Italy: Casa Rosa was created in 1923, in the Portuense area following a request from Benito Mussolini who wanted to bury there the domestic hen with which his children had played so well. In the graveyard others are also buried animals with the famous “surname”: Sandro Pertini’s dog and Anna Magnani’s cats. But also pigeons and even a lioness.

Animal cemeteries in Italy: where they are

Bury it in the garden? It can

The alternatives? According to a directive of the European Union, the burial of dogs and cats is possible in private land and in condominium gardens (with the consent of the administrator) as well as in cemeteries for pets (where, however, the permanence is in average guaranteed for 5 years). There is no national law and the Regions move independently. In any case, before the burial, you must have a certificate from the veterinarian certifying the absence of biological risk (for example, if the animal died of an infection it could pollute the groundwater).

Cremation at the vet

Or you can choose them of cremate the animal, entrusting the body to the veterinarian which relies on specialized centers. It is not possible to obtain the return of the ashes, as the practice is often cumulative. However, it is possible to personally provide for the cremation, by delivering the dog or cat to a private and paid center. The ashes can be dispersed, stored or buried, as long as they are in a biodegradable container.

The paperwork

Once the death has been ascertained, the veterinarian must also issue a certificate, to be brought to the ASL within a certain period (depending on the regions) so that the animal (if equipped with a microchip) is canceled from the registry.
