Bergische HC and GWD Minden drew in a dramatic basement duel in the Handball Bundesliga.
GWD Minden and Bergische HC separated in a real basement thriller with 28:28 (16:16). The draw hardly helps either team, but GWD is a bit less than the BHC. Minden is now in 17th place in the table with a record of 15:47 – and thus the first relegation place.
However, HSG Wetzlar in 16th place, which entitles them to stay in the league, is tied on points. Leipzig in last place is just one point behind. The Bergische HC is in 15th place, but is three points ahead of Minden. There are still three games left to play and a maximum of six points to be awarded.
BHC and GWD at the same level
The first two attacks had varying degrees of success: Johannes Wasilewski gave the BHC the lead, while on the other side Christopher Rudeck parried Minden’s final attempt. A balanced game then developed in which the BHC made better use of its opportunities.
In the middle of the first half, GWD easily equalized the score at 8:8, previously Minden had always been one or two goals behind. The hosts took the lead for the first time with a throw at the empty goal. Two time-outs and five minutes later, nothing had changed in the course of the game: at 11:11 the teams were still on equal terms – and that’s exactly how it continued until the break: the score was 16:16 at the break.
Minden gains an advantage
Round number two began with a GWD goal, which the BHC immediately countered through Wasilewski. Afterwards, Minden was able to briefly pull away with two goals, but the Bergisch “Lions” came back into the game – especially because the BHC’s defense improved significantly. The goalkeepers also became more and more of a factor: both Rudeck and GWD goalkeeper Tibor Ivanisevic made a few saves.
In the final phase, a real crime thriller developed in the basement duel: eight minutes before the end it was still a draw at 24:24. Three minutes before the end, GWD had a two-goal lead and had the best chance of securing an important three points in the relegation battle.
BHC comes back again
But the game was still not decided: Rudeck and two goals ensured another comeback for Bergischer HC. GWD had another chance to take the win with 30 seconds to go, but lost the ball six seconds before the final siren – but the BHC could no longer use this mistake to decide.
