Cecilia Sala will be guest of Fabio Fazio on Sunday 19 January What’s the weather like? (from 7.30pm on Nove). The presenter on the channels announced it socialpublishing some clips of the videos of the return to Italy of the 29-year-old journalist, who remained in prison in Iran for 21 days.

The one with Fabio Fazio, exactly one month after the arrest, will be Cecilia Sala’s first television interview after her release from Evin prison. The journalist was in Iran on a regular journalist visa. On December 19th, the day before the expected return to Italy, it was taken from her hotel in Tehran, arrested and locked in an isolation cell in one of the most infamous prisons in the country.

The captivity at Evin

From Fazio, therefore, it is likely that the journalist will return to the story the details of his imprisonment in Evin. But given that an investigation into the matter is underway, in which Cecilia Sala has already been interviewed by the ROS carabinieri, it is unlikely that new details will emerge.

Previously Cecilia Sala had told some aspects of the detention to Mario Calabresi in her podcast Stories. Explaining that Iran “was the country I most wanted to return to.” But neither at the time of her arrest nor subsequently “was it ever explained to me why she ended up in an isolation cell”.

The journalist had clarified that, before leaving, «I had taken into consideration the risk of being arrested and that’s something I have scolded a lot once inside. I asked lots of people there for advice before leaving. But the new government had shown a little openness, granting visas to foreign journalists: there was CNN, Paris Match.”

The arrest of Cecilia Sala and the diplomatic work

The arrest, therefore, came completely unexpectedly. And although the Tehran authorities have spoken of a arrest for violation of the country’s laws, the suspicion has always been that it was a retaliation after the arrestby Italy at the American request, of the trafficker Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi. So much so that, after the intense diplomatic work that led to the journalist’s release, Abedini was also released from prison and returned to his homeland.

The latest revelations of New York Times

An intrigue about which, however, only hypotheses can be made, given that there is officially no connection. But in the meantime the New York Times revealed that Elon Musk also played a role in the affair and, according to the American newspaper, intervened by giving his own contribution to obtain the journalist’s release through the Iranian ambassador to the UN Amir Saeid Iravani.
