Lady Cathy Ferguson, wife of Sir Alex, has sadly passed away at the age of 84. United announced this in a statement. She was described by the club as “a support to Sir Alex throughout his career”.

A statement on behalf of the Ferguson family said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, who leaves behind her husband, three children, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family requests privacy at this time.” Lady Cathy met Sir Alex Ferguson during their teenage years in Govan, Glasgow. They had been together for more than 50 years. Sir Alex has always been very close to his wife: “Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a foundation of stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.”

Alex Ferguson left as United manager in 2013 and said spending more time with Cathy and her family was one of the reasons behind his decision. The flags at Old Trafford have been lowered in tribute and the team will wear a black armband for tomorrow’s Premier League match against Brentford, Saturday 7 October.
