Catching up after corona: young people spend more money on old and new

Despite the high energy costs and inflation, we are going to celebrate New Year’s Eve en masse in Brabant. It seems that young people in particular are looking forward to finally going wild again this year after two quiet New Years due to the corona pandemic: 93% of 18 to 24-year-olds indicate that they will celebrate New Year’s Eve. One that can cost quite a bit, according to research by Newcom, commissioned by Omroep Brabant.

Newcom questioned 812 people from Brabant of different ages, backgrounds and from all parts of the province about the upcoming New Year.

The same amount of money
Most people from Brabant seem to care little about the current financial problems during the turn of the year. The majority of Brabant residents (79%) expect to spend the same amount of money on New Year’s Eve this year as last year, some even more.

At that time, there were still some corona rules and there was a ban on fireworks, which may have resulted in less spending last year.

Catching up
Many young people seem to want to catch up this year. More than a third (37%) of the younger generation expects to spend more money on New Year’s Eve than last year.

Six out of ten people from Brabant do not expect to spend money on fireworks. That is the same as last year during the fireworks ban. When it comes to expensive fireworks, Brabant holds back. 80% of Brabant people who set off fireworks expect to spend no more than 50 euros on this.
