The municipality of Maastricht calls on tourists not to come and celebrate carnival in the provincial capital this year.
“It is really the intention that everyone in their own municipality celebrates,” said Mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake. “Normally we welcome everyone, but not this year.”
Smaller and more limited
In Maastricht, just like in other Limburg municipalities, the mainland celebration is smaller and more limited. “I am very pleased that the cabinet has provided space to celebrate carnival. Maastricht is ready, and I wholeheartedly wish it on everyone,” says Penn-te Strake. “On the other hand, the virus has not gone away yet, and the minister has given a number of clear advice. Within those frameworks, we have looked at a suitable interpretation together with the catering industry and the Tempeleers.”

Outside
For example, agreements have been made for an unorganized permanent resident; so celebrate outside in the city as much as possible. To avoid crowds in certain areas, venues in the city and performances by artists outside are banned. In addition, carnival carts are also not allowed. In order to be able to celebrate Carnival ‘outside’ as much as possible, outdoor buffets and toilets will be placed.
Organized Carnival
The smaller and limited carnival also impacts the annual events. Maastricht will still have a city prince. Carnival association De Tempeleers has decided to declare a pastor of the city for the remaining carnival season. That happens on Saturday afternoon.
