Carnival peak is over: much less corona infections

The decrease in the number of infections seems to have started. The carnival peak is behind us. Last week more than 100,000 new infections were counted in our province, this week that number remains at 75,556 positive tests.

It is a decrease of almost thirty percent in our province. That is different from the national picture: in the past week, around 428,381 new infections were counted throughout the Netherlands. That is about the same as a week earlier. Nationally, the number of infections therefore appears to be stabilizing.

The fact that such a decrease is now seen in Brabant can be explained by the large peak that was seen in our province after Carnival. That peak was much higher than in the rest of the country.

Hospitals
The number of patients in hospitals in Brabant continues to rise. There are now 338 patients with a corona infection in hospitals in Brabant. Far more than the 230 patients who were in hospitals a week ago.

Despite the increasing hospital occupancy, the figures are reason for the cabinet to let go of more corona measures. On Tuesday, healthcare minister Kuipers announced that the remaining measures will be released from next Wednesday:

  • the mask in public transport,
  • work from home advice,
  • the corona ticket,
  • testing twice a week in education.

However, the basic advice continues to apply, such as washing hands regularly, keeping a distance where possible and ventilating well.
