Carnival activities in Horst, Limburg, were immediately halted on Monday after a deadly stabbing. According to a police spokeswoman, the quarrel occurred around 7:35 p.m. on Sint Lambertusplein in the village.
Immediately after the fatal stabbing, the music went off and the bars emptied. Everyone went home. Some people cried and were comforted by others. “The party was over in one go,” say two boys on their way home against De Limburger† “We had just been in cafe De Lange for two minutes when the music stopped and everyone was asked to go home.”
Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the victim. But the deployment of a trauma helicopter also proved in vain. The seriously injured victim died on the spot.
The police have cordoned off the square in the center of Horst and are investigating. The spokeswoman was not yet able to say what led to the stabbing. The identity of the victim is also not yet known.
In the hustle and bustle of the carnival, many people witnessed the fatal stabbing. Professional help has been called in for them, according to the police spokeswoman. People who have seen it happen or have been otherwise emotionally affected by it are received in the town hall in Horst.
The police would not comment further on the case, according to the spokeswoman in the interest of the investigation.
