Appeal Mallorca caseThe girlfriend and mother of Carlo Heuvelman (27), who was kicked to death in Mallorca in July 2021, spoke very emotionally during the appeal this morning in Leeuwarden about how difficult it is to restart her life. Carlo’s mother almost begged the suspects to say something: “Please give me clarity.”

Friend Lisa was very emotional and explained that she has started life again, but that a lot has changed. “I still live in two worlds, the life before July 2021 and after. I will always be the ‘partner of’ and I like that, it keeps me connected to Carlo. Sometimes I have to fight to break free, fight to see bright spots. I have to let go to continue, but I don’t want to let go, I don’t want to let go of Carlo. He should never be forgotten, the thought of him being forgotten if I let him go scares me.”

After Lisa, Carlo’s mother spoke. She was very emotional after Lisa spoke, so she started a little later. She is convinced that several people kicked Carlo. “Of course he couldn’t defend himself, even though he was big and strong. My heart still breaks… How I saw him in the ICU, in a coma. I’m so angry… How can you all be against my son… So unfair.”

Carlo’s mother also expressed her anger at the suspects: “I can’t stand that people here only want to save their skins. How could no one have seen anything? Such a big man of 1.96 meters? Tell us what you did and saw! And accept the consequences! Not knowing what happened to my son is unpalatable. Please give me clarity, even if it is anonymous… I only have photos and a grave… You have no idea… I can no longer touch him, give him a hug, nothing…”, she said very deeply. emotional.

Carlo’s mother still cries every day and asks herself every day: why did you go back? I can only think of one thing: he probably wanted to intervene. Carlo never abandoned friends.”

Prison sentences from 1 to 7 years

27-year-old Carlo Heuvelman died in July 2021 after a series of fights between Dutch young men on the island of Mallorca. He had little to do with the fights, but probably wanted to calm a friend down and ended up in the middle of the violence. Nine teenagers from a group of friends from Hilversum were arrested in the weeks after Carlo’s death. Seven of them received prison sentences ranging from 1 to 7 years for all kinds of violence that night.

It is almost certain that several suspects kicked Carlo, even when he was already on the ground. But only Sanil B. was convicted for his death, mainly because he had Carlo’s DNA on his shoe. He is the only one still in custody. All suspects – all in their early twenties from Hilversum – deny having anything to do with Carlo’s death.

In addition to Sanil B., the Public Prosecution Service also suspects Mees T. and Hein B., but the judge in Leeuwarden acquitted the latter two last November for the manslaughter of Carlo. They were sentenced to 30 months in prison, but for other forms of violence, including attempted manslaughter of other victims. Both suspects and the judiciary appealed. They have nothing new during that appeal so far told about Carlo’s death.

Today is day 4 of the appeal. The verdict in the case is not until March 14 next year.
