Every year more than 12,000 people in the Netherlands are diagnosed with colon cancer. Early detection is of vital importance, and that is why everyone between 55 and 75 receives a call for the population screening every two years. Carlo Boszhard will soon be 56 and has now also received the well -known purple envelope.

Gloss youth away

Carlo had to swallow when he received the invitation. “I’ve been on my desk for a while, but I’m going to participate too. I’m 55-plus, so I don’t have to put it aside but be smart,” he writes in his column in Telephotist.

For a long time he wanted to stick to the idea that not much can happen at his age, but in the end Carlo is now also just a senior. “The shine of the youth is gone, yet I still feel young.”

Death comes quickly

Because of that population screening, Carlo has to think of his own mortality. And on the Netflix-Zombieser series The Last of Us, which has a nice episode about an older gay post that has to deal with a fatal disease. “One of the men gets sick in a world where there is no more care and so death comes quickly.”

Fortunately there are no zombies in Landsmeer, so Carlo can safely send the jar with its stools on the mail. “I open the purple envelope,” he concludes his column.
