The growth in registrations in Italy is supported by electrified cars: hybrids confirm themselves as queens of the market, electric and plug-in vehicles are growing. The rental contribution is very decisive

The Italian automotive market 2026 started well, given the growth in registrations of 14% in February which follows +6.2% in January. There were 157,334 new license plates delivered in the month just ended, compared to 137,965 in February 2025. Even in this case, however, long-term rental contributed significantly: excluding it, the growth would be reduced to 9%. However, the balance sheet is encouraging first two months of 2026with 299,373 registrations which mark a progress of 10.2% on the 271,686 of January-February 2025 (+3.5% compared to 2024 and -12.9% compared to 2019). The trend of the electricalstill partially influenced by the state ecobonus. Battery-powered cars reached 7.9% of monthly sales, with a total of 12,572 units, up from 5.0% in February 2025 and 6.6% in the previous month.

Among them power supplies2026 extends the negative trend of traditional fuels with another 6 percentage points lost by petrol engines in the last month, for a share in the cumulative January-February 2026 that fell to 19.5%. Diesel lost almost 1/4 of its volumes and fell to 6.9% in the two-month period (-2.6%). LPG is also losing share, falling to 5% in February and 5.7% in January-February (-4.5%). The hybrids, however, perform well and reaffirm their role as queens of the market they earn 7.2 points in the month just ended, for a 52.1% share in the first two months of 2026. Full hybrids contribute 15.1%, while mild hybrids score 36.8%. As anticipated, sales of electric vehicles represented a 7.9% share in February, up 2.9 points compared to 2025. Good results also for plug-in hybrids at 8.5% share compared to 4.5% a year ago and 8.6% in January-February 2026, +4.5%.
