After a slight increase in July, the car sales last month, according to the sector organizations RAI Association and BOVAG, collapsed again. There were 26,663 new cars on license plate in August, 3 percent less than in August 2024. In the first eight months of 2025, 237,909 cars were sold, there were 247,308 last year.

The sale of fully electric cars is also falling in the Netherlands. Of these, 9051 of these were put on license plate, which means a decrease of 0.4 percent on an annual basis. At 33.9 percent, the market share of fully electric is more than for gasoline (15.5 percent) and diesel (1.1 percent).

Hybrid is growing

Dutch motorists are currently en masse for hybrid. Where car sales fall over the entire width, that of the hybrid variants on an annual basis has risen by 4.8 percent to 13,074 in August. One in two newly sold cars was hybrid last month.

The sale of Tesla is halved. 776 were sold in August. That was 1545 a year ago. Over the first eight months, the sale of 16,102 in 2024 to 8103 fell to 8103 in the period up to and including August this year.

Byd

Whereas the Chinese car brand BYD in Europe has now caught up with Tesla in the number of sales, BYD still has a major deficit in the Netherlands on the American brand. In August 389 new BYDs were put on license plate and in the whole of 2025 so far 2445. That will be an increase of 30 percent in the first eight months compared to last year.

Kia was by far the best -selling brand in August in the Netherlands with a market share of 10.2 percent. Toyota follows a market share of 8.4 percent and Volkswagen takes third place with 8 percent.
