On Thursday around 8.35 am, the fire brigade from the Westhoek zone was called to the Middelstraat in Zuidschote near Ypres to free a woman from her car. She ended up in the canal with her car.
When the fire brigade arrived, the victim had already climbed out of the car. She was sitting in the meadow next to the canal. She was immediately taken to hospital. Her vehicle was towed.
It is not exactly clear how the accident could happen. According to witnesses, an overtaking maneuver went wrong. Middelstraat was closed to traffic for a while. The fire brigade provided signaling and cleaned the road surface.
