At least 8 people were killed and 20 injured in the Indian capital New Delhi on Monday after an explosion in a stationary car. That report local media including The Hindustan Times. Local authorities are still investigating the cause.

The car, a Hyundai i20, exploded near the historic Red Fort in Delhi’s Old City just before 7 p.m. local time. Some nearby cars also caught fire.

A Delhi Police spokesperson told the BBC that three people were killed at the time of the blast were in the car. Virtually nothing is yet clear about the cause of the explosion and a possible motive.

The authorities will thoroughly investigate the incident, Home Minister Amit Shah wrote in an email message on X. According to The Hindustan Times Police in Delhi’s Gurgaon suburb have arrested two people in connection with the case so far.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has in a own X-message expressed his condolences to the relatives. News agency ANI reports that several states in India have been put on “high alert” as a precaution. The same goes for Delhi airport, the metro, and government buildings in the capital.
