In the rediscovery and rebirth of European seriality, also made possible by the success of streaming platforms, it is less and less rare to come across products from minor countries, once little considered. One of these is little Luxembourg; on Netflix, a two-season series is available that fits well into the crime trend.

Captains it is a classic product in setting (at home it airs free-to-air on a commercial channel) which collects all the typical elements of European crime.

The body of 15-year-old Jenny Engel is found in a wood on the outskirts of a small village, while her twin sister is missing.

Detective Luc Capitani is sent from the capital to investigate the case; enterprising and intriguing, Capitani must first of all try to unhinge the wall of silence and secrets.

That of Manscheid (a fictitious location, but largely plausible in its aesthetic and social articulation) is indeed a village where everyone knows each other and where the mysteries seem to build the very identity of the place and its inhabitants.

While extending into excessive episodes, Captains has an original structure for a crime, with half-hour episodes; a choice that allows rhythm even where suspense is scarce.

For those who love the fabric of “local drama” and discover new markets for crime TV series.
