Les Bleus record holder
Long-time France goalkeeper and team captain Hugo Lloris has announced the end of his career in the “Équipe Tricolore”. The 36-year-old from Tottenham Hotspur made his debut for France in November 2008 and went on to make 144 appearances, becoming his country’s record capper. Only at the World Cup in Qatar did he overtake ex-professional Lilian Thuram (142 games). The highlight of his national team career was the 2018 World Cup title in Russia.
“There comes a moment when you have to pass on your post. I’ve always said that the France national team doesn’t belong to anyone and we all have to keep it that way, me first. I think the team in defense is ready to develop and there is also a goalkeeper who is ready (Mike Maignan, ed.)” explained Lloris, who has been captain since 2010, in an interview with the French newspaper “L’Equipe“.

With Les Bleus, Lloris also played in a European Championship final (2016) and celebrated victory in the Nations League (2021). He will now focus on his club career at Spurs, where he is under contract until 2024. “I prefer to retire at the peak rather than waiting too much for a drop in performance or a tournament. There’s also a family decision, I feel the need to spend more time with my wife and children.” The keeper played his last game for France on December 18, losing the World Cup final to Argentina in Qatar. That game marked his 20th appearance in a global showdown, more than any other goalkeeper in history.
