Cannes (France), 11 May. (askanews) – There is Thelma and Louise in black and white on the official posterrecently displayed on the Grand Palais: a tribute to the Ridley Scott film which was presented here 35 years ago. Everything is ready in Cannes, all that’s missing is the red carpet with the stars to officially kick off the edition number 79 of the Festival.
A subdued year for Italy, absent from the Competition and the main sections, albeit “Vittorio De Sica – Life on stage” by Francesco Zippel is competing at Cannes Classic; the organizers are already thinking big about the next one, for the 80th anniversary of one of the most famous film festivals.
The curtain rises on May 12th with the opening ceremony and the Honorary Palm for Lifetime Achievement to Peter Jackson. Among the most anticipated names in the Competition, Pedro Almodovar, Cristian Mungiu, Asghar Farhadi, James Gray.
But there are many expected stars: Scarlett Johansson, Demi Moore, Léa Seydoux, Monica Bellucci, Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem. Someone arrives with ladders and stools to take a stand and have a privileged view towards the Palais, where the stars go up, and books their place for the festival.
“We are ready for 12 magical evenings,” says a pensioner. “Every year is magical, it’s true, every year we have great stars. First of all, to do what we do, you have to be a cinephile, because you have to love cinema, and then we love actors and we say to ourselves: why not? Let’s go and see them live to talk to them and above all photograph them.”
