Canada has denied Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi entry to the country. The 23-year-old attacker is therefore unable to travel to Toronto with the Ivory Coast selection for Saturday’s World Cup group match against Germany.
“Administrative permission to enter Canada could not be obtained at this time,” the Ivory Coast Football Association said via X. “Elye Wahi will therefore remain in the United States and wait for the team’s return.”
According to The Athletic, Wahi is suspected of involvement in match fixing in France, where he plays on loan for Nice. He is said to have deliberately taken a yellow card in the match against Metz on May 17. According to the French Football Federation, notable sports betting would have been involved in that match. Wahi was arrested and interrogated in France last month.
Previously, Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey was also denied permission to enter Canada. He was not allowed to enter the country because he was charged in England last summer with five rapes and one sexual assault.
