Only one win left
Canada’s national team has maintained their lead in North and Central America World Cup qualifiers and are on the verge of a second appearance at a finals. On Wednesday evening, the team of currently absent Bayern pro Alphonso Davies won 2-0 (0-0) at El Salvador at the end of the current qualifying window. The goals were scored by Atiba Hutchinson (66th minute) and Jonathan David (90+3).
After the perfect start to the year with three wins from three games and a total of 25 points, leaders Canada are only missing one more success to be sure to be there in Qatar at the end of 2022 (November 21 to December 18). So far, 1986 was the country’s only participation. In the current qualification it was the sixth win in a row.
Things are also looking good for World Cup regulars Mexico and USA with 21 points each. Mexico won 1-0 (0-0) at home against Panama. The USA mastered their mandatory task in a 3-0 (2-0) win over Hondruas. At the game in Minnesota, temperatures of minus 20 degrees were an additional challenge. Weston McKennie (8th), Walker Zimmerman (37th) and Christian Pulisic (67th) scored for the United States, which will host the 2026 World Cup together with Mexico and Canada, which will then increase with 48 teams. Two Honduran players were reportedly substituted due to hypothermia.
Panama and Costa Rica, who won 1-0 (0-0) against Jamaica, are the biggest contenders for fourth place and thus participation in the playoffs. Fourth will face Oceania’s best team after the end of the group stage in June.
