Cameroon misses perfect preliminary round

Host Cameroon just missed the perfect preliminary round at the Africa Cup of Nations. The team led by Munich Bundesliga professional Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting did not go beyond a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Cape Verde on the third day of the game, but finished Group A in first place.

The Cameroonians had already secured the round of 16 ticket before the game. With four points, Cape Verde have every reason to hope to find their way into the knockout stage as one of the top four in third place.

Top scorer Vincent Aboubakar gave the hosts the lead with his fifth goal of the tournament (39′), Garry Rodrigues equalized (53′).

Along with Cameroon, Burkina Faso is sure to make it to the round of 16. Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba’s team finished second in the table with a 1-1 (1-0) win over Ethiopia, who were eliminated from last place in the group.
