From tomorrow there will be camera surveillance in the center of Meppel. The reason was two robberies in the city, both times involving the threat of a stabbing weapon.

Mayor Cees Bijl says he regrets the robberies and has decided to implement camera surveillance after contacting the police and the Public Prosecution Service. This is a temporary measure for at least four weeks. The cameras will be located in Woldstraat and Touwstraat. Robberies recently took place in these two streets. No one was injured.

First it happened in Woldstraat, where a clothing store was robbed. Four days later it happened in Touwstraat, where a beauty salon became a victim. The police are investigating a possible link between these two robberies. No one has been arrested yet.

In addition to camera surveillance, boas and police will also have a more visible presence in the city center. “We looked together with the police at what we, and what the police can do, to remove the feeling of insecurity,” says temporary mayor Bijl. “These measures have emerged from this. We are also taking other measures, but we are not going to announce them publicly.”
