The governor of the US state of California says that President Donald Trump has ordered an investigation into him. “He targeted me not because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for president,” Democrat Gavin Newsom said in a video message on social media.

Newsom states in the nearly five-minute video that federal agents have recently been knocking on the doors of family, friends and former employees.

In the video, Newsom addresses Trump directly when he says, “You can request my documents. You can investigate me. You can harass me. Put my name on every possible enemies list you have, but leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta.”

Newsom accuses authorities of looking for something to prosecute him for. “They haven’t found a crime – they’re just trying to find one.”

The governor, who called Trump “the most corrupt president in American history,” says the president has ordered his Justice Department to investigate him. This has happened to other critics of the president before, Newsom says. “But to get me, he also goes after my wife.”

The White House has not yet responded to Newsom’s allegations.
