Cagliari: green light for the construction of the new stadium. It will be named after Gigi Riva

The approval for public financing has arrived from the Region. The hope is that the demolition of Sant’Elia and the laying of the first stone will take place by 2024

Black on white. After a long back and forth, the Sardinia Region has given the definitive green light to the 50 million public financing for the construction of the new Cagliari stadium. The facility will be called Unipol Domus, like the current temporary structure of the Sardinians, and will be named after Gigi Riva. The regional funding was the last real piece missing from the rossoblù club’s project to continue with the construction process of the work. A fundamental help especially after the decision of Tommaso Giulini’s company to remove the shopping center from the structure. At a regional level this is an unprecedented contribution, as underlined by the President of the Region Christian Solinas himself: “We are the only reality in Italy that has decided to invest so much in sport, we will not only help Cagliari but all the other sports clubs to modernize the various structures on the island”. For Giulini’s club it is a historic moment: “The path of a work in which we strongly believe for Cagliari and for all of Sardinia continues.”

After the regional funding, the ball is now in the court of the Municipality of Cagliari which is completing the process of the technical and landscape services conference. Afterwards we will move on to update and close the project on a financial level and then arrive at the tender for the construction of the work. With the hope that remains that of starting to demolish the old Sant’Elia (the new stadium will be built above) and of laying the first stone of the “Gigi Riva” by 2024. With the future start of work on the new stadium it will remain standing also the possibility for Cagliari to host one or more matches of the 2032 European Championship which has been awarded to Italy and Turkey. Even if the Sardinian capital will have to beat stiff competition.
