The government has decided to significantly increase the fines on the illegal sale of vapes and cigarettes. This applies to supermarkets, catering establishments and online sales. Increasing fines has a deterrent effect and the government therefore wants to combat the illegal sale of vapes more vigorously. If a seller is caught for the first time, he will be fined €2040 (€700 higher than now).
Illegal sales will cost you dearly
State Secretary Tielen (Youth, Prevention and Sport): “Nicotine is extremely bad for you and also extremely addictive. We do what we can to prevent the sale of illegal vapes and thus protect the health of children. The message for illegal sellers is clear: illegal vape sales will cost you very dearly. From the first time you are caught.”
Increase of €1000
The fine for a second offense for online sellers, supermarkets, night shops or cafes will increase by more than €1,000 to €3,060. If illegal sales are detected in an organization with more than 50 employees, the fine will increase by more than €1,300 to €4,040. The increase is expected to take effect on July 1, 2026.
