On Wednesday, the European Commission issued its decision on the procedure that the cabinet follows to reduce the noise pollution around Schiphol. Brussels concludes that the Netherlands has taken into account the procedure, except for a few points.

The ministry thanks the committee for its decision. This allows the government to continue with its plans to reduce the noise nuisance around Schiphol, and to restore the legal position of local residents. This also offers the required clarity for the aviation sector.

The Commission asks the Netherlands to pay attention to the following points: how General Aviation contributes to the reduction of noise, the effect of autonomous developments at Schiphol, and the operational measures that have been considered.

Next steps

The Ministry will include the above points in the Dutch response to the decision, as the procedure prescribes. If the reaction has been sent, this Balanced Approach procedure is officially completed. When changing the LVB, the points of attention of the committee will also be included.

The package of measures will then be introduced as of November 2025. For this, the Ministry is working on a limited change to the airport traffic decision. The new maximum number of aircraft movements of 478,000 will be recorded for the day, of which 27,000 for the night.
