A German duel would have been possible in the Champions League playoffs. But that doesn’t happen. But it could happen in the round of 16.
Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen will not meet in the Champions League playoffs. Instead, BVB will face the Italian club Atalanta Bergamo. Leverkusen meets Olympiacos Piraeus. This was the result of the draw on Friday in Nyon.
However, a German duel is still possible in the round of 16. BVB or Leverkusen could have successful playoff games against FC Bayern there. If both Bundesliga teams advance, a German duel is guaranteed. Because: Bayern, who qualified directly for the round of 16 as second in the league table, will definitely meet the winner of one of the two playoff rounds with German participation.
The first legs will take place on February 17th and 18th. The second legs will be played a week later, on February 24th and 25th.
DFB striker Nick Woltemade faces Newcastle United in the playoffs against Qarabağ Ağdam from Azerbaijan. Galatasaray Istanbul with Leroy Sané and İlkay Gündoğan meets Juventus Turin. FK Bodø/Glimt duels with Inter Milan, Club Brugge with Atlético Madrid. In addition, the last two participants from the French Ligue1 face each other in a direct duel: AS Monaco plays against the reigning title holders Paris Saint-Germain.
Curious: Benfica Lisbon with star coach José Mourinho has to face Real Madrid again. The Portuguese had already met the “Royals” on the last day of the group match and had secured their playoff ticket at the last second with a 4-2 win. Goalkeeper Trubin headed the decisive goal in stoppage time.
