BVB: Watzke praises outstanding coaching work and warns against Chelsea

Terzic team with BVB league record

Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke attributes the current success of Borussia Dortmund primarily to the first-class sporting leadership. “Edin Terzic and his team are doing an excellent job. Incidentally, I said that back in November when things looked dimmer from a sporting point of view,” said Watzke “Ruhr News”. The 63-year-old said he was happy that his opinion was reflected in the results. “But our run is a joint product and also the result of the very good work of Sebastian Kehl (sports director; ed.) and before that by Michael Zorc,” Watzke continued.

“We always knew what was in the team. There has never been a lack of quality. Since the winter, however, the team has internalized that talent alone is not enough. This current will to win is what sets us apart at the moment,” said the head of the Bundesliga club, who is currently second in the table – tied with leaders FC Bayern. The Black and Yellows have won eight times in a row in the Bundesliga – a previous club record. However, Borussia are still missing eleven more three-pointers before the Bayern Munich record from the 2013/14 season under Pep Guardiola. “Vize” Borussia Mönchengladbach is much more within reach with twelve wins in a row in 1987. / Statistics: longest winning streak in Bundesliga history)

Apparently, Watzke doesn’t want to spread too much euphoria, because “we’re in the middle of the route, not on the home straight. If we continue to play with total passion, and only then will we continue to score consistently.” After winning ten competitive games in a row, Watzke is also hoping for a successful appearance at Chelsea in the Champions League after the first leg was in the top 16 round teams went 1-0 to BVB.

“Nobody should believe that tenth place in the Premier League reflects the sporting quality of Chelsea. The knot can burst at any time, after all they have spent more than 600 million euros on transfers in eight months in the quarter-finals.” In terms of squad value, 1.03 billion euros (Chelsea) meet 522.7 million euros (Dortmund).
